Tension builds between Canada, U.S. over TPP deal

“If there are countries that are … not willing to reach an agreement at the Hawaii meeting, we can’t afford to let the TPP go adrift for their sake,” Mr. Amari, Japan’s minister of state for economic and fiscal policy, told a news conference Tuesday, according to Kyodo News.

The Conservative government, which is seeking re-election this fall amid a weakening economy, risks a political backlash if it opens the door significantly wider for foreign dairy and poultry imports. Mr. Fast told The Globe and Mail last week he’s in no hurry to clinch the Pacific Rim trade deal.

NCFA leads industry in getting ahead of demands

The feedlot program involves the National Cattle Feeders’ Association, retailers, processors, veterinarians, the National Farm Animal Care Council and animal welfare specialists.

The Canadian Feedlot Animal Care Assessment Program has been in development for about a year and a half. It is intended to be a companion to the national beef code of practice with dedicated requirements for feedlot animals to assure processors and retailers that cattle are well cared for. It also benefits feedlot operators because well tended animals suffer less sickness and death.

Canadian Cattle Feeders Committed to Prudent Use of Antimicrobials

Calgary (April 29, 2015) — The National Cattle Feeders’ Association (NCFA) responded today to the Report of the Auditor General of Canada on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). The Report provided an overview of both the Canadian and global context in regard to AMR and made a number of recommendations, including the Public Health Agency of Canada’s engagement with key partners in the development of a pan-Canadian strategy, and if Health Canada has taken adequate steps to regulate the sale of antimicrobials and promote their prudent use.

Canadian Beef Industry Award for Outstanding Research and Innovation established

The Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) today introduced a new award that honors outstanding researchers for their contribution to the competitiveness and sustainability of the Canadian beef industry. The Canadian Beef Industry Award for Outstanding Research and Innovation will publically recognize scientists and academics that are actively involved in strong research programs aligned with industry priorities, continually engage with industry stakeholders, and demonstrate their passion and long-term commitment through leadership, teamwork, and mentorship.
