NCFA Action on Health Canada Front of Package Labeling Proposal

June 10, 2022 | Videos

Health Canada is proposing to require a front-of-package (FOP) nutrition symbol on foods high in saturated fat, sugars and/or sodium, which would require ground beef sold at retail to carry a “high in” saturated fat warning label. NCFA, along with beef industry partners, know ground beef should be exempt from Health Canada’s proposed front-of-package labelling like other nutritious foods, such as single ingredient meat, milk, eggs, vegetables, and fruit.

From 2017-2019, NCFA met with officials at Health Canada on numerous occasions to understand the issue and outline the cattle feeder and overall beef industry perspective. Since then, we have been actively advocating our concerns on this labelling initiative.

November 2017 – Staff and Directors met with Health Canada Travis Gordon on Ottawa Lobby Day
