National Cattle Feeders’ Association focused on competitiveness

NCFA Chair, Ryan Thompson details priorities for the association, including the labour crisis:
The labour-shortage issue will be ongoing and NCFA will continue to work hand-in-hand with packers on this one because if packers don’t have enough labour to realize full value from the carcass, feeders won’t be getting full value for their animals. Changes to the temporary foreign worker program since the report was released have only halted further damage and the NCFA stands with all of agriculture and agri-food in support of the Canadian Agriculture and Agri-Food Workforce Action Plan’s roadmap to address critical labour shortages.

NCFA advocacy win: Government of Canada strengthens Temporary Foreign Worker Program through Budget 2017

NCFA staff and consultants have worked diligently with Ministers in Ottawa to advocate for the continued delivery and improvement of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. NCFA presented to the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities earlier in 2016. The Committee tabled its report — Temporary Foreign Worker Program — which outlined 21 recommendations, on September 19. The Government of Canada took early action to respond to the report by:

  • Eliminating the four-year cumulative duration “four-in, four-out” rule
  • Maintaining the cap on the proportion of low-wage temporary foreign workers at 20 percent for employers who accessed the Program prior to June 20, 2014
  • Committing to further develop pathways to permanent residency
